CHURCH FAST 2026
WHAT IS FASTING?
Fasting is to voluntarily abstain from eating for an extended period of time.
WHY FAST?
Fasting is a discipline that God wants us to practice. In scripture, God conveys to us that spiritual food is more important than physical food. It is supposed to be a regular practice in the life of the follower of Christ. When Jesus was teaching His disciples about fasting in Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus used the words, “…when you fast…” indicating that if you were His disciple, you would practice fasting.
Our bodies need discipline in order to make choices to obey God instead of the desires of our flesh. In 1 Corinthians 9:27 Paul the Apostle said, … “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” This is a sobering scripture that warns us against hypocrisy. We need to remind ourselves that Jesus strongly opposed those He considered hypocrites.
We must remember the gravity of sin to keep us far from it and to not use God’s grace as an excuse to keep on sinning. Hebrews 10:26-27 states: 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Fasting helps us to resist temptation. In Matthew 4:4 we read that Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by the devil. He demonstrated how to combat the tactics of the enemy through fasting and using the Word of God. He made His flesh submit to the will of God the Father. Jesus lived His life in obedience to the Father, and this extended eternal life to us. As followers of Christ, we too are to be obedient. The servant is not greater than the master. If Jesus fasted, then how much more do we need to fast?
In the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 8:1-3 (NKJV)states: 8 “Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
We see a parallel with the Israelites and followers of Christ in the above passage. God tells the children of Israel to obey His commands so that they may possess the land. Jesus tells His followers to pick up their cross and follow Him in obedience that they may have eternal life. Both require obedience to obtain the blessing of God.
WHAT DOES FASTING SHOW US?
Fasting uses our flesh to demonstrate our great need for God! The practice of fasting disciplines our bodies to value and prioritize the Word of God above our desires and even above our need for strength and sustenance! It shows us that while food may sustain us by physical means, only God’s Word can sustain us in eternal things which matter far more!
MEDICAL SIDE OF FASTING
Ask God and He will show you what you should fast. Anyone currently under the care of a physician for medical issues or receiving treatment for a medical issue should consult their physician before going without food for an extended period of time. If you do have medical issues that would prohibit you from fasting food, you could consider fasting TV or media. The point is that there is something God wants you to separate yourself from for three weeks so that you can see Him more clearly. Don’t cheat yourself by removing yourself from the fast entirely.
